What is Pizza FM?
Good question! Pizza FM is a free-form, noncommercial, college radio station streamed via the internet out of the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. This student-run project came from the realization that the university lacks a truly student run radio station. College radio comes in a variety of forms, but it’s typically noncommercial with some kind of “variety” format and connections to the local music sphere.
Pizza FM highlights songs and artists unexposed by commercial stations. Additionally, you’ll hear in-studio performances, talk, radio dramas, and whatever else we can think of.
Pizza FM now and in the future.
In addition to a radio station, Pizza FM hosts a comprehensive local shows listing calendar and a music blog. Pizza FM has been consistently developing a presence on campus and in Champaign-Urbana. The project has received support from several local and national companies, organizations, and individuals including Polyvinyl Records, Exile on Main St., the Mayor of Champaign Don Gerard, and Sub Pop Records.
Why call it “Pizza FM”?
The most frequently asked question, and something that can not go unexplained. Pizza FM’s name was originally thought up by former member Matt Lurie during a brainstorming session when the idea for a college station was in its infancy. The reasoning? “Everyone loves pizza.” Our logo, on the other hand, was masterfully created by Drew O’Brien and Stephanie Lona.
